Black bean aphid finds the softest parts of the plant first — shoot tips, flower stems, the underside of young leaves — and settles in as the weather warms. Left to build, a colony can genuinely thin out how many pods the plant actually sets, even though whatever beans do form stay perfectly fine to eat. One move does most of the work against it: once plants have flowered and the first pods are underway, pinch the growing tip off and take away the soft growth the aphids were after in the first place.

  • A handful of aphids on one shoot tip isn't cause for alarm. It's the heavy, sustained colonies that actually cost pod set.

Cultivar Notes

None of the cultivars sourced for this zone — Coles Prolific, Red Seeded, Scottish, Superaguadulce or Suttons Dwarf — carry any specific claim about blackfly resistance; their supplier notes cover sowing method and timing rather than pest performance. Variety choice isn't a real lever against this problem here, so tip-pinching and regular checks do the actual work regardless of which cultivar is in the ground.

If plants are flowering well but pods aren't setting and you're not seeing aphids in any real number, that points to a pollination issue rather than pest pressure — worth ruling out before assuming blackfly is behind it.
