A nitrogen shortfall is the most likely cause — silverbeet is a heavy nitrogen feeder, and general yellowing of the older, outer leaves along with slower growth is the classic sign. The pattern is what tells the causes apart: overall yellowing points to nitrogen, yellowing between the veins while the veins stay green points to magnesium, and yellowing paired with grey-centred spots means a leaf disease rather than a feeding gap at all.
Ranked, most likely first
- Nitrogen shortfall. As a heavy nitrogen feeder, silverbeet shows a shortage as general yellowing (sometimes reddening) of the older, outer leaves first, with a general lack of vigour — not a patchy or veined pattern.
- Magnesium deficiency. Silverbeet is the same species as sugar beet and shares its symptom: yellowing starts at the margins and tips of the older leaves and works inward between the veins, while the veins themselves stay green. Left long enough, the yellow zones develop small dead spots.
- Waterlogged or compacted soil. Roots sitting in poorly drained or compacted ground can yellow the leaves on their own, independent of how much nitrogen or magnesium is actually in the soil — feeding won't fix a drainage problem.
- Cold soil early in spring. Cold-induced yellowing shows up on young, actively growing spring leaves and can persist on those particular leaves for the rest of the season even once the soil warms — which can make an early sowing look like a feeding problem when it's really a temperature one.
- Cercospora leaf spot. This fungal disease infects silverbeet as well as beetroot, producing grey-centred lesions with a red-purple or tan margin, favoured by warm, humid weather. It's the one cause here that comes with visible spots rather than plain or interveinal yellowing — a quick way to rule it in or out.
What cool/mountain's colder soil changes
Silverbeet follows the same Egmont-sourced window in every NZ zone — sow August to May, harvest October to July — so timing itself isn't what sets cool/mountain apart. Frost lingers here from March through to November, meaning spring soil stays cold for longer than in a milder zone. That makes cold-induced yellowing on early leaves more likely here on top of the ordinary nitrogen and magnesium risks, so a pale early-season sowing is worth watching for a week or two before reaching for fertiliser. The same cool, often damper conditions can also stretch Cercospora's warm-humid trigger later into autumn than a warmer zone sees, so a leaf-spot check is worth keeping up further into the season here.
Fixing it
- Feed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser first — blood and bone, pelletised manure, or a soluble high-nitrogen feed all work, and it's the single most likely fix for this crop.
- Check the pattern before feeding again. Yellowing between the veins with the veins staying green is magnesium, not nitrogen — a magnesium-specific feed (Epsom salts to the soil or as a foliar spray) is the fix there, and more nitrogen won't help.
- Improve drainage if the bed stays wet — raise the bed, work in coarse organic matter, or ease off watering until the topsoil has dried a little.
- Give an early, cold-soil sowing time. Leaves already affected by cold-induced yellowing usually won't green up again themselves, but new growth should come through normally once the soil warms — no feeding fix needed for this one.
- Treat grey-centred spots with a coloured margin as disease, not a feeding gap. Remove affected leaves, water at the base rather than over the foliage, space plants for airflow, and rotate silverbeet and beetroot out of that bed for a season or two if it recurs.
Cultivar notes
None of the cultivars sourced for this zone make a claim specifically about resisting yellowing, but their sowing notes are worth following regardless: Koanga's Margaret Dale and Perpetual Spinach are both raised in trays through spring and early autumn, pricked out at 2.5cm spacing once the first leaves appear, and transplanted at 30cm spacing once seedlings reach about 7cm — both are noted as needing fertile ground, which lines up directly with the nitrogen-feeder picture above. Rainbow follows the same tray-raised approach across spring and autumn, transplanted at 30cm spacing once seedlings are 6–8cm tall.
Next season
Feed proactively rather than waiting for yellowing to show — a fertile bed going in, plus a nitrogen top-up during the growing season, heads off the most common cause before it starts. For an early sowing in this zone specifically, expect a slower, paler start from the cold soil alone and hold off on extra feeding until you can see whether it clears on its own as the ground warms.
