Pull the root and look at where it splits. A branch starting from a stone, clod, or a hard patch of ground means the taproot was physically pushed off course. A smooth, even split with no obstruction anywhere near it usually points to heavy feeding instead — fresh manure or too much nitrogen can fork a root in soil that's otherwise perfectly clean.
What's behind it
- The taproot met an obstacle. Stones, clumps of unbroken soil, or a compacted patch all deflect a growing root, and it divides or curls around whatever's blocking it rather than running straight down.
- The growing tip took an early hit. Damage to the root's tip — from a pest, a disease, or simple physical knocking — makes the plant respond by pushing out secondary roots from the injury, which ends up looking exactly like an obstruction-caused fork.
- Overfeeding, especially with fresh manure. This is a documented effect on its own: heavier nitrogen doses drive more branching, independent of anything physical in the ground. Manure that hasn't broken down does the same thing.
- Too many roots competing for space. An unthinned row crowds neighbouring roots against each other, and the crowding itself produces more misshapen, forked results.
- A seedling that was moved. Carrot doesn't tolerate being lifted and replanted — the disturbance to the taproot from transplanting is enough on its own to set off forking, which is why this crop is always sown where it's meant to stay.
- A carrot held over past its season. One left in the ground long enough to start bolting toward seed puts out its own secondary roots from the taproot as part of that process — pulled around then, it looks forked even though nothing went wrong earlier.
What temperate conditions change
The sowing calendar is the same wherever you garden in NZ — direct sow September to May, harvest December to August, per Egmont's culture guide, carrot always sown where it will grow rather than transplanted. The real zone difference is how quickly the ground itself becomes forkable-obstacle-free. Temperate soil dries and warms up earlier in spring than a colder garden's, which makes it noticeably easier to break a bed down into the fine, stone-free tilth a straight root needs, and to get that done earlier within the sowing window rather than working against cold, sticky ground. None of the actual causes above change with the zone — a stone is a stone and excess nitrogen is excess nitrogen everywhere — it's just less effort here to get the soil into the state that avoids them.
Fixing it
- Work the bed over properly ahead of sowing — break up every clod you can find and pick or sieve out stones, so there's nothing left for the root to meet on the way down.
- Skip fresh manure entirely for carrots. Feed with something well-aged, or a balanced fertiliser applied before sowing rather than during the crop.
- Thin to about 7.5–10cm between plants as soon as seedlings are big enough to handle — crowding is one of the more avoidable causes on this list.
- Sow direct every time. Trays and transplanting aren't compatible with a clean taproot on this crop.
- Lift the crop once it's ready rather than leaving it in the ground through a second season, where bolting triggers the same branching from a different cause.
- Treat a chronically stony or heavy bed as a longer project — improving its structure with compost or sand over a season or two, or growing carrots somewhere else while that happens.
Cultivar notes
The cultivars sourced for this zone — Akaroa Long Red and Juwarot from Koanga Institute, and Amsterdam Sprint, Berlicum and Black Nebula from Kings Seeds NZ — don't carry any claim specific to forking or resisting it. What they do all share is a direct-sow method: none is documented as suited to tray-raising, which backs up the strongest cultivation-practice fix above regardless of which one you choose.
